Iceland awakes something special in everyone, I am sure about it. It’s challenging, gorgeous and rough. In us, it awakened the survival instinct.During the Christmas everything was closed, from gas stations to fast food restaurant. Of course, the same happens on New Year’s Eve, especially in a small town like Höfn. We made some shopping a few days ago and bought some food, that we could cook.Today, thanks to Chef Celestine, we...
I was worried, when I received an email from Extreme Iceland team one evening before the Ice Cave tour, warning us about the possibility of not being able to visit the ice cave because it was flooded (too much rain, high temperatures in last days). So I was really serious thinking to cancel the trip. It’s good that Celestine is more optimistic than I am and she said to give it a try.The trip to the ice cave is full of adventure, 35 minutes...
To geet there, just follow the signs to the Visitor Center and take the path to the waterfall. The hike is easy, 1,8 km one way. We had sun today, and that made the walk even more beautiful.
The black sand beach near Vik is one of the most amazing places in Iceland. But as incredible as this place is, it is also very dangerous. The waves are so strong, especially during the winter time, that a lot of people lost their lives taken by the sea.The lava columns make the beach spectacular, thanks to the most talented designer in the world, the nature. The black and white combination is just fantastic.
I still can’t believe I saw...
People say that in life you should never stop trying. The first time we tried to see this place was impossible. The wind was so violent, that I was concerned about our safety. But today we gave it another chance and it was a good decision, because the weather was kind and allowed us some minutes to see this place.
And the mood is changing every 5 minutes. If you don’t know it’s a good idea to drive to a place or not, then just go. When you will be at your destination, it can be the best weather in Iceland ever.
Or the worst.
The small city Vik would be during the summertime probably an idyllic place, but during the wintertime is a real challange. Yesterday and today the weather was harsh in the area, and the effects are visible. Good boots are needed just to walk from the car to the nice restaurant where you plan to have a warm cappuccino.I believe that the problem is with the parties that should assure the maintenance of the city. The weather was tough everywhere...
I learned something today, and that’s that we are so fragile. Life is fragile. The nature has the strength to crash us. While trying to see the Black Beach (interesting name btw, black as the sand from lava and also for death), I felt how strong the nature can be: my tiny body was depending on the mercy of the wild wind and I had to hold a part of a fence do I would not fly directly in the wings of the eternity given by the cold, furious...
Today the weather made the visiting impossible. It rained like it’s the apocalypse and the wind was really severe. I was afraid that the wind will make us roll over. The waterfalls that were planned for today were rescheduled for when we will return to Reykjavik. They are anyway close to the main road, we could see them from the car. The only brave people that went outside and visited the waterfalls were asians.
During the Christmas time, there’s a beautiful tradition in Iceland: people remember the dead family members and they put to the grave candles or lighted crosses. The place looks dreamfully.
I travel through Iceland with Celestine, a very good friend. We like to give names to the cars that we rent. First days we had a Toyota RAV 4 and we thought about it as being a lady. So we named “her” Mary Hope (yeah, I know, this is what happens when both parents want to contribute to the name of the child. To make things clear, my choice was Mary).
After 2 days we changed the car with a modern one, Suzuki Vitara. This time is a “he”...
Traveling in Iceland during the winter is not impossible if you have a car, it’s rather interesting. The challanges so far: all shops/restaurants/gas stations/fast food places are closed during the Christmas time. Make food provisions or you will starve. No, really.
the gas stations in the country side are just some gas pumps with card payments. No person is available to help.
the snow comes and goes in the blink of an eye. If it’s...
