Oban

I arrived today in Oban, with the train from Glasgow. The ticket was around 30 euros paid in advance, the trip was around 3 hours with amazing views!

The moment I arrived in Oban, it started to rain. Bad. Well, this is Scotland so I will not let a few drops to stop me explore this wonderful place.

Oban town is small, normally people come here to take the ferry and visit the nearby islands. So it is pretty crowded here. My plan for tomorrow is to also hop on an island, and Lismore is the winner. The initial plan was to visit Kerrera, but I couldn’t find any ferryboat that has daily service to this island, so probably there is none or maybe I should have booked in advance. But Lismore should also be nice. Tomorrow it will rain as well, so I will have to see how this will go. Most probably I will be spontaneous regarding the walk on the island. In plan there is a complete walk, 28 km in total, if it’s dry.

Below is the timetable for September:

Nearby – around 7 km far from Oban – is Dunstaffnage Castle. The walk was muddy, because of course of the rain, but I suppose in this area is rainy most of the time. I was completely soaked after this walk. But it was fun. To return to Oban I chose the easiest solution – I took a bus. The ticket was around 1,6 Pounds.

A lifesaver is the app that I found with all bus services around many countries. Until now I used it a lot in UK and this is how I find buses that noone ever sees and it’s amazing. The name of the app – Total Transit. I need Internet connection to see the nearby stations and the time when the bus will arrive. I had no bad experience, each time the bus was at the station with maximum 5 minutes delay. Also my experience is that if you are at the station in time, and for 10-15 minutes there is no bus coming, just wait a little bit longer. Sometimes there are delays on the road and the bus is never too early, so the chances that the bus left already are minimal. So I totally recommend the app, it is a bless.
