Great Glen Way – Stage 5

The breakfast today at the guesthouse had an amazing view!

The plate was the biggest I had until now in Scotland and it kept me going the whole day.

The portion of Great Glen Way planned for today was supposed to be very hard. 24 km with high climbing. I didn’t find the climbings that bad and the first 15 km were on mountain terrain, very nice for my tired feet. The part that I found terrible were the 5 km on main road after the low route is joining the high route. Those kilometers were painful!!

In the morning I started from Invermoriston with a steep climbing. I cannot imagine how somebody would go by bicycle on that uphill. The climbing was about 20 minutes and when I was up I had amazing views!

The high route was closed at this point, but I noticed some meters away a path diversion for the high route, that didn’t look very easy to walk on, especially with a big backpack.

The walk was nice and had three hills.

As I already mentioned, after 15 km the walk was on the main road. Near this street was a very tight path for the Great Glen Way. But I found it too narrow to walk with my backpack.

On this street there were two places that offered cakes. You just have to take a cake, put the money in a “honesty box” and leave. But you need coins.

After these 5 km the path takes to left through the forest of Drumnadrochit. It was a very nice walk and the smell of the trees was amazing!

Once in Drumnadrochit, I left my backpack at the hostel and took the footpath to the Uruquart Castle.

I price of 9 Pounds was too big from my perspective, so I decided to not go inside the ruins. The view with the castle is the most wonderful thing about it and this is for free.

In Drumnadrochit there’s a grocery shop and some restaurants.

Below is the Elevation Profile of the walk:
