Kanazawa

I was two days in Kanazawa, the first day was sunny so I saw all the spots I wanted to see this day, second day was very rainy, so I took the chance and stayed in bed alllll daaaayyy long. It was good after so many weeks of everyday long walks.

Temples:

Kenrokuen Garden (300 yen, 2,5 euro):

There are six elements that truly beautiful Japanese Garden should have:

  • extensive space
  • quiet seclusion
  • human artistry
  • old fashioned elegance
  • flowing water
  • distant views

These elements were described in a classical Chinese poem. According to this poem, it’s impossible to creat a garden that has all these six elements. But it’s said that the garden in Kanazawa has them all.

All the trees in this region have a cone made out of rope and I was curious why. After a research in Internet, it seems that during the winter, these rope cones are tied to protect the trees from heavy snow that can break the branches (and this arrangement has also a name – yukitsuri).

The Kanazawa Castle with great views:

The Tea Neighborhood:

In Kanazawa there’s where they produce the gold leaf for different uses, from ornaments on vessels, temples and shrines, altars, Buddhist instruments. So there is a lot of “gold” in Kanazawa, from pen with gold to ice cream with a gold leaf. It was funny to see so much gold in a single place, basically all the shops sell different souvenirs with gold. There are also cosmetics and a gold museum.
