When we arrived in Höfn, we asked the owner of the Guesthouse what people in Iceland do for New Year’s Eve. They celebrate it with a bonfire. We decided to go there and have a big party with all the locals.
Very important is the clothing, so we prepared very good with warm clothes and went to the bonfire.
I personally expected that a lot of people will be on the street, dancing, singing and laughing. What happened, everybody took their cars and drove to the bonfire. We were the only ones walking (aprox 1 km) … tourists!
They arrived at the bonfire and had a good time … inside the cars. Weird.
It was cold, but not that cold to stay inside a car. I wanted to see the bonfire and I was really focused.
Celestine started to speak with me, something about the sky, that is changing. She asked what is the probability to see the Aurora tonight.
But I was focused, the bonfire looked like everything will burn completely.
In this moment, my dear friend was really shocked about my reaction and stopped saying “I don’t care about the bonfire, the thing is happening, now, here. We will see the Aurora!!”. I looked up in the sky, surprised, like I just had a dream and she just brutally woke me up. And there is was, the sky starting somehow to move, visible with the eye.
We started to scream of happiness, we hugged and watched the show that the nature gave us. It was a moving light, green, getting each second stronger. Unbelievable show. And we were the only ones dancing on an empty field and enjoying each second of having in the same time and the same place the bonfire, fireworks and the Aurora Borealis. Perfect moment, perfect place, perfect company. And exactly on the 31st of December.
I am grateful for this 3 hours of freezing while watching the most marvelous spectacle ever.

The photos are made with a phone, bad quality, in reality it was 1000 times better.
